Aquatic Ambiance

A mostly marine blog from a girl who has a serious thing for fish. My personal blog. I do not own any of the photos unless otherwise stated. Enjoy.

Types of fish scales.

Placoid scales are small, conical toothlike structures characteristic of Chondrichthyes (sharks and rays) that give the skin of these animals its sandpaper-y feel.

Diamond-shaped ganoid scales, present in gars and bichirs and considered primitive for bony fishes, are composed of layers of silvery enamel (ganoin) on the upper surface and bone on the lower.

Other bony fishes have either cycloid or ctenoid scales. These scales are thing and flexible and are arranged in overlapping rows.
